Social Media’s Positive Impact on Communication

Over the past century, communication has become increasingly faster and more efficient changing the way humans interact with one another and form relationships.  This has created a completely different landscape for friendships and romantic relationships than ever before. Social media has many positive impacts on communication today that were never fathomable prior.

Connect Families

In the past, if a relative lived in another state or another country, one had to send a letter with printed pictures or wait until one could travel there to catch them up on what is going on.  However, now with social media, family, no matter where they are, can see all the pictures that show every first step, graduation, or just lunch.

Connect Foreign Friends

Another great way social media improves communication is through forging friendships with people around the globe.  In the old days, people could never imagine having close friends on the other side of the world.  A letter would be sent to a pen pal that took days or weeks to get to the other person.  Forget about waiting for the reply!

With social media, friendships can be forged through similar interests forged by looking at the same pages or speaking on similar platforms.

Long Distance Love

Long distance relationships are hard.  Before social media, one would have to consider moving a probable breakup.  Opportunities were passed up in the pursuit of love.  Now, however, there is so much access to everyday life that a loved one can feel like they are enjoying the same breakfast or hiking the same trail.  It can bring long- distance love closer and less painful.

Sharing of Interests

Communication is not only to make relationships but also to share interests with others.  Travel is a great example of how social media has impacted communication of interests.  People typically rely on the news to know what is happening in other countries.  However, now there are many perspectives shown by the average person that may have a very different experience than a news anchor or a politician. Social media has expanded horizons and shown the truth about the everyday life inside some of the most controversial countries and has given these areas a chance to show off their beauty.

For instance, sharing a post about an interesting country can get more followers on Instagram and in turn lead to a larger audience for future posts.

Sharing an Idea or Concern

The news does not always cover every story.  There are many issues, ideas, and even movements that are shared on social media.  The #metoo movement is just one example of social media shedding light on a problem and giving is a strong voice.  When starting a movement, it can be difficult to get the necessary following.  Try to get support from others with a large support or buy followers on Instagram in order to create interest and lead real followers to come to a page.

Whether the motivation is family, friends, love, or sharing interests, ideas or concerns social media has improved communication significantly.
